Diversity Program
Diversity at Northwestern Memorial encompasses all the ways that we as human beings are both similar and different, with respect to: race, gender, age, sexual orientation, religious and cultural beliefs, veteran status, physical or developmental challenges, languages and socioeconomic status.
To achieve the Best People goal, Northwestern Memorial promotes and embraces the following:
- Representation racially and culturally reflecting the diverse communities we serve at all levels of the organization (78% women, 48% minority, 14% minority managers, average age is 47)
- Inclusion welcoming all patients and staff
- Cultural Competency: delivering healthcare in a way that is sensitive to and respectful of our patient's cultural background and health belief Diversity Programs
Representation:
- The Medical Staff Diversity Initiative, our formal program for minority physician recruitment established in 1999, has resulted in a significant increase in minority medical staff.
- Since 1999, our management team has increased from 10% to 14% minority representation
Inclusiveness:
- Domestic Partner Benefits are currently offered to all employees.
- The Northwestern Memorial Mentoring Program Pilot, launched in 2002 for managers, has a minority focus. The ongoing program starting in 2003 will be broad-based (minority and non-minority).
- We established a Diversity Council as an advisory group to the Office of Diversity and Northwestern Memorial management team.
- A full spectrum of Youth Programs gives healthcare experiences to diverse students from elementary school to post graduate levels.
Cultural Competency:
- Diversity Awareness Training is integral to new employee orientation and incorporated into required training for managers.
- Language Interpreter Services are accessible 24 hours a day, providing assistance in communicating in languages other than English for all patients.
