Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes

Do you have diabetes that does not require insulin treatment? Diabetes is a condition that causes the body to have difficulty controlling blood sugar. Many patients with diabetes may be unaware that they are at increased risk of developing atherosclerosis (when blood vessels become clogged with fatty matter and reduce the flow of blood). Atherosclerosis may eventually lead to many life- threatening complications such as heart attacks and stroke.

The Preventive Cardiology Center at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine is investigating the effects of two FDA-approved diabetes medications. While both medications are approved for the treatment of diabetes, Northwestern researchers are evaluating the medication's effects on the blood vessels and markers in the blood associated with the development of atherosclerosis. If you are 35 to 75 years of age and have diabetes that does not require insulin treatment, you may be eligible for this research study. Participants will receive study-related medication and physician visits at no charge. Parking and financial compensation will be provided.
