Health Resources and Community Education

Northwestern Memorial is dedicated to empowering community residents to make proactive healthcare decisions by providing health information that is accessible and easy to understand.

The Health Learning Center
The Health Learning Center at Northwestern Memorial Hospital comprise one of the largest health information libraries in the country and welcome more than 75,000 visitors each year. Health Learning Center staff members help patients, family members and visitors find the information they need in books, video and DVD programs, journals and the Internet. They fill physician "prescriptions" for private health education sessions on topics ranging from high blood pressure management to new diagnoses of diseases like type 2 diabetes and asthma. Special programs and services exist for cancer patients and families. Health educators, medical librarians, and social workers assist with individual health information needs from walk-in, telephone, and e-mail customers from throughout the region. In addition to a wealth of educational materials, the center offers health information programs, an annual prevention program, an annual teacher conference and a Mini-Med School lecture series led by Northwestern Memorial medical experts on subjects that include the brain, the heart, and women’s health. The Health Learning Centers are currently engaged in long-term efforts to educate consumers about advance directives and various patient safety issues.

Community Education
Northwestern Memorial Hospital provides more than 70 classes, support groups, and special programs for the community. Class offerings include a full range of fitness and motion classes, specialty topics such as cancer & diabetes, and 16 different programs designed for expectant couples and their families.

Northwestern Memorial also sponsors a variety of special events and health fairs, including discussions with some of the nation's leading medical experts, and health screenings and blood pressure checks for healthcare consumers.
