For more than 25 years, Northwestern Memorial Hospital has partnered with Lawson House YMCA to offer comprehensive services for low-income, formerly homeless or functionally challenged Chicagoans.
Since 2000, Lawson House, a 583-room residence, has been home to the James and Catherine Denny Primary Care and Preventive Medicine Center (Denny Clinic). This innovative facility was made possible by a generous gift from James and Catherine Denny, longtime friends of Northwestern Memorial. James Denny served as chairman of the board of Northwestern Memorial HealthCare from 1994-2000 then as chairman of the board for Northwestern Memorial Foundation from 2000-2006.
With staff and financial support from Northwestern Memorial, the Denny Clinic provides preventive healthcare, health appraisals and counseling, treatment for chronic conditions, acute care, physical exams, immunizations, health screenings and a full array of educational services and support to the residents of Lawson House. On-site primary care has proven to be the most effective vehicle for serving the primary and preventive care needs of the mostly uninsured and underinsured residents of Lawson House YMCA.
Plans are now underway to partner with Near North Health Services Corporation to expand the clinic to serve even more members of Chicago's underserved populations.
