Near North Health Service Corporation was founded in 1966 with the merger of two well-respected community-based health centers operated by Northwestern Memorial Hospital and Children's Memorial Hospital to serve the area's indigent children. In response to the need for quality adult health care in the Near North community, Northwestern Memorial Hospital established the Near North Adult Health Center three years later in 1969.
Since its inception 40 years ago, Near North has grown from a small community health clinic in the Near North neighborhood to four comprehensive healthcare centers on Chicago's north, south and west sides offering social services, outreach, and health education. Near North Health Service Corporation's medical staff includes specialists in internal medicine, pediatrics, family medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmology, psychiatry, podiatry and dentistry.
To assist Near North Health Services Corporation achieve its goals, Northwestern Memorial has provided funding for physician and staff support, grant-writing assistance, and much more. Northwestern Memorial funding helped purchase the land that houses the organization's largest clinic and administrative offices, the Winfield Moody Health Center near Cabrini-Green, and pays the salaries of certain staff members. Grant-writing assistance funded the continuation of essential social services and two Northwestern Memorial executives serve on the NNHSC board of directors, providing strategic oversight and guidance. Northwestern Memorial also consults on strategies for measuring and documenting outcomes at Near North Health Services Corporation, data that is becoming increasingly important to secure funding.
The relationship between Near North Health Services Corporation and Northwestern Memorial Hospital has grown into a strategic partnership, leveraging the strengths of both partners and benefiting both. NNHSC provides invaluable educational opportunities for medical students and physicians-in-training from Northwestern's Feinberg School of Medicine. The partnership also helps the hospital understand cultural nuances and attitudes that might impact patient care.
With support from Northwestern Memorial and Northwestern University, Near North Health Services Corporation is currently part of the ambitious Diabetes Care Project, a program aimed at people with diabetes in underserved, minority populations.
