One of Northwestern Memorial's distinguishing strengths is its ability to treat a full range of neurological disorders, including stroke, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease) and sleep disorders. Our Department of Neurology ranks among the nation's leading centers of neurological patient care, teaching and research. John Kessler, M.D., chair of the department, is developing an approach to utilize stem cells to treat spinal cord injuries and regenerate a patient's nervous system. Our Cognitive Neurology and Alzheimer's Disease Center is a referral center for patients from around the world, while our Comprehensive Stroke Program, led by Mark Alberts, M.D., has established stroke treatment protocols and guidelines for stroke centers nationally. Northwestern Memorial is one of the few academic medical centers in the country, and the only one in Chicago, to offer Gamma Knife radiosurgery. This recently updated robotic system uses focused radiation to treat deeply seated or critically located brain lesions and tumors inaccessible through conventional surgery.
