Heart Valve Surgery

Before Surgery
Visit the Dentist
It is important to have your teeth cleaned and have a complete exam to rule out infection.

Visit the Cardiac Surgeon
At your cardiac surgeon's visit, your surgery date will be set. The Cardiac Surgery office will assist you with pre-registration for both the doctor's office and the hospital. Remember to bring your social security number and insurance information to your appointment.

Nurse Practitioner Appointment
You will be given an appointment to see the nurse practitioner one week before surgery. At your appointment, your medical history will be taken, a physical exam performed and any questions answered. If you are diabetic, medications will be reviewed and instructions will be given.

The nurse practitioner will provide written information for your surgery date and arrival time. Be aware that your surgery date or time may need to be moved due to emergencies. The cardiac surgeon's office will call you if any changes are made. Call the surgeon's office, (312) 695-6984, if you have questions.

After your exam, you will be sent to Perioperative Assessment Services (PAS) for pre-operative blood work and tests.
