During the Test
The entire Dual Source 64 slice CTA study takes between 30 to 90 minutes but the image acquisition takes approximately 10 seconds. Before the test begins, the radiology staff will explain the test and the equipment used. An Intravenous (IV) line will be started by a nurse. You will be asked to lie on a table connected to the Dual Source 64 slice CTA. The technologist (tech) will place cardiac monitor leads on your chest and the table will move to line up your body with the scanning machine.
The tech will keep in contact with you throughout the exam by intercom. As the test begins, it is very important that you lie still and follow the instructions of the tech and doctor. A relatively slow, even heart rate produces the best results for the Dual Source 64 slice CTA. Because people may be nervous or have a naturally higher heart rate, a medication called Lopressor, a fast acting beta blocker, may rarely be needed to be given through the IV line to help slow your heart rate. The same IV line will be used to inject iodine contrast agent (dye) which highlights the blood vessels in the heart.
You will be given a single Nitroglycerin tablet under your tongue, which will dilate the coronary arteries being examined. For short intervals throughout the test, the tech will ask you to hold your breath, which also helps lower your heart rate.
As the dye is injected, you may feel warm and flushed or feel the urge to urinate. You may also note a metallic taste in your mouth. These are normal effects.
Please tell the tech and doctor immediately if you note any of the following:
