According to the Gale Encyclopedia of Cancer, uterine cancer, also called endometrial cancer, is the most common gynecologic cancer. Endometrial cancer develops when the cells that make up the inner lining of the uterus (the endometrium) become abnormal and grow uncontrollably. Endometrial cancer primarily affects postmenopausal women; however, 25 percent of cases occur in premenopausal women. There are two types of endometrial cancer: estrogen-dependent and non-estrogen-dependent.
