With an aging population where people are looking to maintain their healthy lifestyles, many patients are beginning to ask questions about hip or knee replacements. Fortunately, there are many approaches to consider other than the traditional surgical approach. This includes everything from activity modification to injection therapies to minimally invasive surgery. Raju Ghate, MD, orthopedic surgeon, says the decision to have surgery is really a patient driven question, and age is not necessarily the cut-off for surgery. The real question relates to pain and lack of mobility. Hear him explain how physical therapy, anti-inflammatories and injections therapies like cortisone or viscosupplementations, such as Sinvisc or Orthovisc, may negate the need for knee replacement surgery. Dr. Ghate discusses what to expect in terms of recovery and longevity of the surgery, as well as the option of a minimally invasive procedure.
