Some progressive brain disorders have signs and symptoms similar to Parkinson's disease. In the early stages the symptoms may be mistaken for Parkinson's disease and may even respond to some of the same medications, such as levodopa. However, if other symptoms develop that are not found in patients with Parkinson's disease then the treatments are quite different. For this reason, these disorders are known as "Atypical Parkinsonisms". Symptoms of these disorders tend to progress faster than those of Parkinson's disease and usually do not respond as well to Parkinson's disease medications.
