Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Specialized Equipment

The Renée Schine Crown Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, provides care for more than 800 premature and seriously ill newborns every year. The nursery provides special warming beds, monitors and equipment, including:

  • Pulse oximeter monitor
    Small device on baby's hand or foot which measures oxygen saturation in the blood

  • Intravenous (IV) catheter
    A tube or needle placed in the baby's vein to provide fluid

  • Nasogastric tube
    A tube passed through the nose into the stomach for feeding or for emptying the stomach

  • Endotracheal or nasopharyngeal tube
    A tube placed in the baby's nose or mouth to assist with breathing

  • Umbilical venous catheter (UVC) or umbilical arterial catheter (UAC)
    Small tube placed in the vessels of the umbilical cord for giving fluids and taking blood samples
