Center for Women's Cardiovascular Health
Preconception Evaluation
Women with known cardiac disease should undergo a complete preconception evaluation, which includes defining the initial cardiac problem, assessing baseline cardiac function prior to a pregnancy, and exploring all prior cardiac treatments, including surgery. Prior cardiac treatments, such as the surgical placement of an artificial valve, may complicate future pregnancies.
If you are a women with known cardiac disease that is contemplating pregnancy, it is important to remember that if you are active and able to exercise, you may have less significant cardiac disease and therefore, have less anticipated problems with pregnancy.
