Lipid Disorders/Metabolic Syndrome

Lipid disorders include problems with cholesterol and triglycerides, low HDL-cholesterol or high LDL-cholesterol or a combination of these. The metabolic syndrome is a collection of metabolic risk factors that naturally cluster and predict the future development of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. The Lipid Disorders/Metabolic Syndrome Clinic treats patients with lipid disorders and/or the metabolic syndrome.

Innovative ways to improve lipid and metabolic risk factors for coronary and vascular disease, including stroke and diabetes, will be utilized in the Lipid Disorders/Metabolic Syndrome Clinic. A major emphasis will be on therapeutic lifestyle changes designed to give positive long-term results. State of the art counseling and behavioral techniques are used to achieve healthier diet, regular exercise habits, and weight loss, if needed. Difficult to treat patients may require combination drug therapy. The clinic will foster the integration of clinical care, education, and research in lipid disorders and the metabolic syndrome.
