General Surgery
The numerous attending surgeons in the Division of General Surgery are all faculty members of Feinberg School of Medicine or Northwestern University and the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University. Individual attending surgeons have expertise in surgical critical care and in breast, colon, endocrine, gastrointestinal, laparoscopic, minimally invasive, oncologic, and trauma surgery.
These highly trained surgical specialists treat diseases and perform minimally invasive procedures with the most advanced technology and with many other specialists, as follows:
- Appendicitis: laparoscopic appendectomy
- Breast diseases and breast cancer: image-directed (ultrasound and/or mammogram) biopsy, lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy, mastectomy and breast reconstruction (in conjunction with Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery)
- Colon cancer and diverticulitis: laparoscopic colectomy and bowel surgery
- Disorders of the spleen (ITP, TTP, spherocytosis): laparoscopic splenectomy
- Endocrine diseases: minimally invasive parathyroidectomy and thyroidectomy, and laparoscopic adrenalectomy
- Gallstones: laparoscopic cholecystectomy and laparoscopic common bile duct stone removal, ERCP and bile duct stone removal (in conjunction with Gastroenterology)
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), hiatus hernia and other swallowing disorders (in conjunction with Gastroenterology): laparoscopic hiatus hernia repair and Nissen fundoplication, laparoscopic Heller myotomy
- Hernias: laparoscopic hernia repair, ventral/incisional hernia repair
- Kidney transplantation: laparoscopic living donor nephrectomy (in conjunction with Transplant Surgery)
- Liver tumors: cryosurgery of liver tumors, liver resection
- Morbid obesity: Roux-en-y gastric bypass
- Pancreatic cancer and pancreatitis: endoscopic and laparoscopic diagnosis and treatment, Whipple procedure (pancreato-duodenectomy)
- Sarcoma and melanoma: excision/resection
- Spine surgery: laparoscopic approaches to spine procedures (in conjunction with Neurological Surgery and Orthopaedic Surgery).
