Intestinal Transplantation Program

Intestinal transplantation at Northwestern Memorial offers new hope for patients who are unable to benefit from intestinal rehabilitation. Our dedicated multidisciplinary team is able to offer transplantation as a means of getting patients off perenteral nutrition (PN) to prevent the life-threatening complications of long-term PN.

An Experienced Team
Our surgeons have extensive experience in liver and intestinal procedures, along with transplant surgery. The program follows specific protocols for selective organ acceptance criteria and continued monitoring in the long term to ensure the best possible patient and graft outcomes. The team strives continuously to improve the quality of life for their patients. In an effort to further improve outcomes, our team actively participates in basic science and clinical research endeavors in collaboration with other national and international centers. Our team believes that the provision of care and management of the intestinal failure involves the patient.

Goals of our Intestinal Transplant Program

  • Avoid transplantation if possible
  • Avoid the need to transplant both the intestine and liver
  • Re-establish normal lifestyle for intestine transplant recipients
