The Intestinal Rehabilitation Center at Northwestern Memorial Hospital is one of a handful of centers in the United States, and the only one in the Chicago area, to offer a complete range of medical and surgical interventions for the management of patients with complex intestinal disorders.
Our goal is to improve the quality of life for patients with inadequate bowel function, especially those who have developed complications related to long-term total parenteral nutrition (TPN). This includes patients with short bowel syndrome (SBS), malabsorption, dysmotility, pseudo-obstruction or radiation enteritis.
An Experienced Team
Northwestern Memorial's intestinal rehabilitation team, including gastroenterologists, surgeons, nurses, dietitians, infectious disease specialists and interventional radiologists, works closely with every patient to develop a treatment plan to:
Whether through medical strategies such as optimization of PN prescription, aggressive oral/enteral feeding, and PN weaning by protocol after specialized surgical strategies such as "gut-lengthening" procedures, these dedicated specialists all have a special interest and experience in the management of PN and intestinal failure. At the center of this care is the patient. Education of the patient as active participants in this care is at the heart of its success. Our faculty surgeons, medical gastroenterologists and research coordinators work together to study intestinal diseases through clinical research trials to ensure the best care possible for our patients.
