Kidney Transplant Program

Northwestern Memorial Hospital offers one of the nation's premier kidney transplant programs. For over 40 years, our physicians and surgeons have set the standard in caring for patients with complex kidney disorders. Of the nearly 250 kidney transplant programs in the United States, Northwestern Memorial ranks in the top five percent of all programs in the number of kidney transplants performed.

A Multidisciplinary Approach
Our physicians have pioneered important medical and surgical interventions for the treatment of patients with chronic renal disease and those with vascular access problems. Interventions include:

  • Laparoscopic kidney donation
  • Steroid-free kidney transplant immunosuppression
  • New protocols for desensitizing patients
  • Integration with the pancreas and islet transplant programs for combined transplants for renal disease and type 1 diabetes patients

Our kidney program includes dedicated transplant nephrologists with a team surgeons and tranplantation specialists, cardiologists, infectious disease specialists, psychiatrists, nurses, dietians, social workers and financial counselors. 

Clinical Research
Northwestern Memorial physicians are participating in a study funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to identify a non-invasive marker for transplant rejection. Our physicians are also involved in several clinical research trials.
